How important a second or third language is to your career?

Learning a second language opens up a ton of career opportunities. I’m not just talking about freelancing or working location-independently either, though these are excellent ideas which I’ve personally used. There are lots of other ways that speaking two or more languages can improve your employment prospects. The world is changing fast. More companies than ever are doing business in several – often dozens of – countries around the world, but they can’t do it without hiring globally-minded people who can speak at least one foreign language.

It is well known that learning a language is a matter of gradual perseverance. Chinese is no exception. Chinese is a more and more useful language in the world and you can benefit a lot from it if you can stick to it, no matter adults or kids. One of our students come from Africa, his family is doing clothes trading business in China. He wants to learn Mandarin because he want to do business together with his families. The mandarin now is widely used all over the world. There are many opportunities for him to do the business between his hometown and China. Therefore, he start to learn not only the Mandarin but also the Chinese culture to know about how Chinese people do business and how they think in Chinese logic. The Mandarin study do helps a lot to him.

Why does context work?

As a Chinese teacher, I am always delighted to observe and learn from my students. One thing I have noticed in my interactions with my students is how hard most of them have to struggle during the learning process. The courses you take and the textbooks you use can of course be beneficial, but they alone cannot make you a better language learner. Too much time can be used up figuring out the meaning of words, taking notes in class, looking up words in the dictionary, or talking with friends.
