In order to commemorate Singapore’s Bicentennial, in its 200th anniversary, the Monetary released 2 million $20 notes yesterday (10th June). The notes have Singapore’s first president, Mr. Yusof Ishak printed in the front and eight pioneers who made important contributions to the country at the back. Interested people can trade at selected banks in Singapore with currencies of the same value. Each person can only exchange a maximum of 20 pieces of the new $20 notes.
As proved, the new commemorative notes are on high demand. Many people waited at the bank entrance about 1 hour before the opening hour, and the notes at some banks were ‘sold out’ shortly after opening. According to Zaobao, commemorative notes at the UOB bank at Toa Payoh Central were sold out only 15 mins after opening hour.
Are there really so many zealous ‘currency collectors’? Yes and no. Truly, some people are truly collectors with the purpose of keeping or gifting the notes, while others take this event as a business opportunity and resale the notes at a high price.
On Singapore’s popular second-hand items platform Carousel, there have been hundreds of advertisement reselling the commemorative notes, some even advertised a mark-up price of $88, 4 times more than the original value.
Do you think that the currency collectors who were not lucky at the banks will pay $88 for a $20 note?
