Google’s restrictions over Huawei: setback or opportunity?

Shortly after Huawei and its affiliated being added to a ‘blacklist ‘ of the US Commerce Department, Google becomes one of the first US companies to start cutting ties.

Huawei’s phones and tablets have always been using the Android operating system, developed by Google.

However, now Google has suspended all business activities with Huawei, starting from terminating permits. Although Huawei still has access to Android’s open source operating system, many software including Google Play, Gmail, Google Map, Youtube will say goodbye to future Huawei users.

Silver lining, Huawei users in Mainland China are less affected since Google exits Mainland China’s market earlier in 2010. Moreover, existing Huawei users overseas will still be able to download apps and install system upgrade as usual.

This announcement really came as a shock, just 1 day before the unveiling of Huawei’s Honor 20 Series smartphones in London on 20th May. It is reasonable to assume that future sale figures will be affected, especially in the overseas market.

According to Huawei’s spokesperson, Huawei has been preparing a backup plan for years. A self-developed operating system may be used as an alternative for Android, even replacing it in the future. Although it may be inconvenient to users in the short run, we believe that Huawei will power through this series of events and become stronger as ever.
