Gāo: sānshíliù de zhū.
高: 三 十 六 的 猪。
Gao: 36.

Sūn: wǒde māya, zhè shéinéng kànde chūlái ya. Zhèliǎng zhǎngde
孙: 我 的 妈 呀, 这 谁 能 看 得 出 来 呀。 这 脸 长 得 shàngxià wǔqiānnián cāngsāng a!
‘ 上 下 五 千 年 ’——沧 桑 啊!
Sun: Oh my god, who can tell?! Your face look like it has been through five thousands year of history, so rugged!

1. 你属啥呀(nǐshǔsháya)’person+属(shǔ)+zodiac sign’ is the sentence structure to ask about a person’s zodiac. In this sentence, 啥(shá)means ‘what’, is used as a more casual way of 什么(shénme), to ask Director Gao what is his zodiac sign.

2. 过年(guònián)has two meanings. The first one is a verb, ‘to celebrate Chinese New Year’, the second one is an adverb, ‘in the year ahead’. In this context, 过年 adopts its second meaning.

3. 谁能看得出来呀(shéinéngkànde chūlái ya)看得出来(kànde chūlái)means ‘can see and distinguish sth.’. This sentence is used as an exclamation, meaning ‘no one can see and tell’!

4. 上下五千年(shàngxiàwǔqiānnián)direct translation: up and down five thousand years. Chinese history which is traceable by pictures or writings is roughly five thousands year ago. Hence, we like to use the phrase 上下五千年to imply a long history.

5. 沧桑(cāngsāng)this phrase means vicissitudes or can be used to describe things subject to vicissitudes.

Why we laugh:

There are two reasons we laugh about this part!

1. This year is the year of pigs. We all know there are 12 zodiac signs, so in the years with your zodiac, your age will be a multiplier of 12. Sun guessed that Gao’s age is 60, which is SO much older than his age of 36. That is so wrong!

2. Instead of simply describe someone’s face looks ‘老(lǎo)old’, or ‘沧桑(cāngsāng)filled with vicissitude’, try to describe with phrases like 上下五千年(shàngxiàwǔqiānnián)! As old as Chinese history!
