In Singapore, the typical amount of the Lucky money ranges between 5 to 20 dollars.

As long as you visit other people’s houses and send New Year Greetings (Bai Nian), you can get red packets most of the time, no matter you are a child or unmarried young people.

I still remember receiving red packets from seniors at my last job. It truly made my day.

Red packets not only convey best wishes but also pass on the happiness.

In China, giving out lucky money is much more complicated.

The amount of lucky money depends on many factors including personal income, regional average, the closeness of the relationship and etc.

The amount is either hundreds or lucky numbers such as 66, 88, 128, 666, 888 and etc.

Some young people who just start working also need to give out red packets to young relatives. With their own salary usually not more than a few thousands RMB, lucky money could potentially be quite a burden.

Therefore, you must know your limits when giving out lucky money. Do not suffer at your own cost.

It is the thought that counts.
