蝉联(chánlián)refers to a person or group continuing to hold a title. 联 has a meaning of to join, to link and to continue. But why is 蝉 used here?
蝉, cicadas, are a type of insects often appearing in traditional literary works. During its nymph age, it lives underground for about 16 years until adulthood, after which it shed its skin on a nearby tree and emerge as adults.
Regardless of the form, the nature of the insect is still the same. It is still a cicada. Therefore, people use 蝉 to symbolize a continuing state.
