Although the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, Carrie Lam has been standing firm on her ground regarding the extradition bill, under the growing opposition from the Hong Kong public, Mrs. Lam eventually backs down.
Some Hong Kong citizens have always opposed the extradition bill and started a mass protest from 9th June. Confrontations between the protestors and the police escalated during that time period and there are even people injured.
The main concern of the protestors is that the bill would make Hong Kong more easily affected by the ‘deeply flawed’ judicial system of Mainland China.
Mrs. Lam has expressed that she heard the need the government needs to ‘pause and think' while admitting that the ‘explanation and communication’ regarding the bill has been lacking.
At the same time, she also emphasized that she would not withdraw the bill, but the government would not put a time limit on the period for explanation work so the next step is not clear yet.
