Huawei’s CEO Ren Zhengfei responds to a recent U.S. bid

In a recent interview on Huawei’s CEO Ren Zhengfei conducted by Nikkei News, Mr. Ren responds to the recent U.S. sanctions and the series of accusation about the ‘security risk’.

Since 2018, Huawei has been facing issues promoting its products and technologies in some countries, among which the U.S. is the most serious. On 16th May, the Commerce Department added Huawei and 79 affiliates on U.S. ‘Entity List’, which in reality is a blacklist. It will prohibit Huawei from buying any parts and components from US companies without seeking approval.

Although this announcement was made during the heated phase of the US-China trade war, the head of the Commerce Department insisted that this action is not relevant to the Trade War. The sole reason was that Huawei ‘poses a security threat to national safety and diplomatic policies’.

Many think that not only will the expansion plan of Huawei be disrupted, Huawei may also be forced to make the same compromise that Zhongxing Telecommunication Equipment Corporation made when it was sanctioned with a similar accusation.

According to this, Mr. Ren Zhengfei said that Huawei did not break any laws and will not be forced to allow the U.S. government to make changes to the management. He also further expressed that the U.S. sanctions have limited impact on Huawei business. Huawei is prepared for the sanction and will develop necessary parts and technology in-house with the help of design companies.

At last, Ren Zhengfei said that Huawei will not do businesses in countries where the company is not welcomed. He does not rule out the possibility that Huawei might exit the US market in the future.
