So here is the back story: The night of 21st Dec 2017, an American male, Michael Rohana, sneaked in the Franklin Institute Museum in the state of Delaware after its closing hour. An exhibition of artifacts on loan from China was ongoing then. According to surveillance, he not only viewed the exhibition with his flashlight on and touched many exhibits, but he also went so far and stole a thumb from a Chinese Terracotta Warrior!
How can the security of a museum this horrible? Especially when there is an exhibition of loaned artifacts ongoing?
Many people were extremely mad, but the US arrested the suspect, found the stolen thumb and issued a public apology, while China accepted the apology and tried their best to repair the Terracotta Warrior.
Do you think things are over? You are too young too simple.
时隔一年多,这个案件终于在今年4月5日开庭审理(kāitíng shěnlǐ – v. open the courtroom and process a case)。
After more than a year, this case was finally opened on 5th Apr this year. The defense attorney claimed that this was a ‘youthful vandalism’ of the suspect, not an ‘intentional robbery of the museum’.
Not only that! 7 out of 12 jurors think that the suspect should be acquitted! The jury was released because they were unable to reach a verdict. The prosecutors can decide whether or not they want to seek a retrial by 15th May.
The Terracotta Warriors are not only a valued cultural heritage of Chinese, but they are also one of eight wonders of the world. Hope the US can take this incident seriously and propose a reasonable solution.
