除夕的那天,所有家庭成员会一起吃晚饭。这顿饭被称作“年夜饭”。
On Chinese New Year’s Eve, all the family members gather and have dinner together, which is referred to as ‘nianyefan’ New Year Feast.
年夜饭可以在家吃,也可以去饭店吃。
The New Year Feast can be had at home or restaurant.

不同地区的人们又不同的年夜饭菜谱。但是,一些食物因为它们美好的寓意,成了很多餐桌上的必需品。
People from different regions have different menus. However, due to their prosperous hidden message, some food becomes a necessity on the dining room table.
我们一起来看看它们都是什么吧!

1. 鱼 —— “鱼”谐音“余”,象征“年年有余”,也就是每年都有富余。鱼是年夜饭中必不可少的一道菜。由于它象征着“富余”,所以最好不要吃完哦!
Fish(yú) —— the Chinese characters of Fish and Excess sound the same, symbols ‘niánniányǒuyú’, excess every year. Fish is a must in the New Year Feast.
Ps. As it symbols ‘excess’, so it is better to not finish!
2. 年糕/粘糕 —— 这是一种糯米粉制作成的食物,象征着“年年高升”,也就是每年都能升职加薪。这道菜在年夜饭菜谱中也随处可见。不同地区的做法不同,有甜有咸,煎炒蒸炸都可能。
Rice cake(niángāo)—— This is a something made out of glutinous rice powder, represents ‘niánniángāoshēng’, a big promotion and raise every year. You also can see this dish almost everywhere.
Different regions have different recipes, there are sweet or salty, can be fried, stir-fried, steamed, sautéed or etc.
3. 馒头 —— 对于喜食面食的北方人来说,馒头也很重要。馒头要“发”面后上锅“蒸”。“发”象征着发财而“蒸”象征着蒸蒸日上。
Bun (mántou)—— For the northerners who like flour products, buns are also very important. Bun dough needs to be ‘fā’raised before they can be ‘zhēng’ steamed. ‘fā’ represents ‘fācái’, make a fortune and ‘zhēng’ represents ‘zhēngzhēngrìshàng’, things get better and better.
