Except for door gods, there are also pieces of red paper with writings on them by doors and windows during the Chinese Festival.

A long time ago, people used mahogany boards instead, with names of two gods, Shen Tu and Yu Lei, engraved. The purpose of them is to scare off ghosts. Hence, Chun Lian (Spring Festival Couplets) are also called Tao Fu.

Red represents prosperity in Chinese culture, hence people start to write couplets on red papers since the Song Dynasty. The tradition is preserved and people can express their wishes through couplets.

The two sentences of the couplets have the same number of characters, similar structure, and meanings. Plus the Heng Pi pasted on top of the door, couplets does not only convey new wishes for a new year but also shows cultural heritage.
