During Spring Festival, you may see portrays of two fierce-looking men outside of the main doors in some places.

These two men are called “door gods”.
现在，我们常见的门神分别被叫做秦琼和尉迟恭。他们是中国唐朝皇帝唐太宗的两个将军3。
Nowadays, the door gods we see are called Qin Qiong and Yuchi Gong. They are two generals of Emperor Tai Zong of the Tang Dynasty.
相传4，唐太宗有一次生病，被梦魇5所扰，彻夜6不得安宁，于是他便命两位将军手持武器于门外镇守，结果第二天夜里就睡了个好觉。
According to legend, the emperor was having nightmares and losing quite a lot of sleep during one of his illness. Then, he requested the two generals to guard outside of his door, and he had a good night sleep the next day.
从此，唐太宗便让人给两位将军画像7并贴到了门上，这个习俗流传到了民间。
From then, the emperor demanded portraits of the two generals be put up outside his door, and this custom spread all over the nation.
所以，人们会在春节这一天贴门神，是想让两个将军保护家宅安宁，来年平安无事啊！
Therefore, people put up Door Gods on Spring Festival, wishing the two generals to protect them for the upcoming year.
